Q & A

What is an Alumni?
“Alumni” essentially means: Persons who have received qualifications from a school (high school or tertiary). We, however, want to encourage all students, parents and teachers who have been associated to SP to become members.
Why should you become a member?
The school has a special history and must have touched your life in one way or another. Many friendships and marriages were born through SP. Many ex-students owe their successes to the wonderful manner in which the SP ethos shaped their lives. Now we want to say thank you by assisting the school in reaching even greater heights.
How would the school benefit from the Alumni?
Schools are facing enormous challenges, not only financially but in other areas of education as well. To find qualified Maths and Science teachers nowadays is a struggle. Former Model C schools where class complements are supposedly smaller and facilities are rumoured to be better attract the best teachers. We want SP to have a fair chance at attracting the best. We want to add quality to the building and sports grounds to eliminate the excuse that “we send our kids to former Model C schools because they have better facilities and lower teacher / learner ratios.”
What would be expected from you as member?
A financial contribution is unavoidable but more importantly we would like to tap into your wealth of knowledge, skills and willingness to make a difference. For the general member we would probably meet two or three times a year - when we have the AGM and again when important decisions need to be made where the Executive requires a General Body mandate. The Executive Committee meets at least once a month.
How does one become a member?
There is a membership fee of R250.00 which entitles you to lifetime membership. This can be paid via cash or cheque directly into the Alumni account - details on the Membership Form. This money will go into an investment account together with proceeds raised at our functions. The Alumni General Body (which are the signed up members) will decide which projects we will undertake with Alumni funds. Our aim is to eventually allow the school to be funded by the interest we generate from the membership fees contributed. To achieve this we will need to generate a substantial active membership base.
We have also agreed with the Governing Body that the 2007 Grade 8s will contribute an additional R50.00 per annum which will afford them lifetime membership when they matriculate from the school.
