Speak uP

* Get ready for 2010! The biggest and most important event for many years takes place next year - SP celebrates 60 years of excellence in education! Various events are being planned in celebration. Keep watching this site, as well as the school site at http://www.sphigh.org.za.

SP is in the process of compiling their special 60th anniversary edition of Speak-uP and they are appealing to everyone out there to send stories, special memories, photos, etc. of their time at SP. If you would like to submit a full article or essay, that would also be welcome. They are specifically looking for contributions in the fields of culture, sport and politics, as well as the social side. Many of you out there are prominent in your respective fields. Perhaps there was some incident, person, event, etc. which provided the catalyst? Our 60 years have seen so many changes, especially political. Have you some thoughts about the 70s, the school boycotts of the 80s? On the cultural side, did your participation in 'Lost in the Stars', 'Oklahoma', the musical staged at Steenberg High or the variety shows at 'The Lux' lead you to the Bright Lights? Let the school know.

Also, they are planning to have a section highlighting the achievements of as many SP alumni as possible, but this will be based only on contributions from all of you out there. So let them know what your qualifications are (we are not talking just about university, but all walks of life) and what you are doing now.

Send your contributions to speakup.sp@gmail.com.

Inter-house 2010:

The competition this year was again very tight and very keenly contested. With the final positions uncertain until the very last race, everything hinged on the Boys u/19 relay (just as is did last year). When the dust settled, the final points were read. They were as follows:
1. Mimosa (514)
2. Kendal (506,5)
3. Azalea (433,5)
4. Protea (433).
Yes, Azalea beat Protea by 0.5, reversing last year’s position, when Protea pipped Azalea by 1.

Our heartfelt condolences to the Moerat family on the passing of former principal, Mr MN Moerat on Saturday, 19/12/2009. Although he retired 25 years ago, he still remained very involved in the success of South Peninsula. His influence will continue to be felt at the school and his memory will live on in the school traditions and in the hearts of those he has touched over the years.

The SP Alumni was the dreamchild of Mr Moerat and we will continue to honour his memory by keeping this dream alive.

A tribute ceremony to celebrate the life of Mr MN Moerat (1924- 2009) will be held at
South Peninsula High School on Saturday 23 January 2010 at 10h00 in the Main Hall.

If anyone would like to post a few words of tribute which can be put on the school's website, please email them to Barry Saunders on bsaun@xsinet.co.za . A page dedicated to Mr Moerat will be loaded in a day or two on the school site.

Golf Day - 31/05/2009

The Global Classroom Conference group from SP will be leaving on Saturday 6 June to attend the Annual International Conference in the Shetland Islands, Scotland.

The parents of these learners have already made tremendous sacrifices to pay for the travelling costs to date. This amounted to R10 000.

The school is hosting an SP Golf Day on Sunday 31 May 2009, in order to cover the additional travelling costs of this group.

The Golf Day will be held at King David Golf Course. Anyone interested in a 4-ball, or is able to assist us in donating prizes, must please contact the school, or Ms Bastian at 072 6892797.

Any person who wishes to sponsor a hole, and thereby use the space to advertise their business, can also contact us.
We, the teachers, learners and parents of the Global Classroom group would greatly appreciate any assistance available from the school community.

Please click here for the entry form.

You might already have read or heard about some detail of the article below. We would like students, ex-students, teachers and parents to share your views with us. The alumni executive believe that this a crucial precedent-setting issue which needs to be resolved in a way which ensures that disciplinary standards are maintained, not only at SP but at all of our schools. We support Mr Isaacs in his objective of maintaining disciplinary standards at SP and protecting students and teachers from disruptive, non-educative influences.

Please mail us with your comments. We will post your responses on the website...

Principal locks out 'disruptive' pupils
    Andisiwe Makinana
    January 17 2008 at 11:22AM

A city school principal has dug in his heels and refused to accept five "disruptive" schoolchildren for the new year, saying he was prepared to lose his job in order to instil discipline at his school.

The five pupils arrived at South Peninsula High School in Diep River on Wednesday for the first day of school, but they were told to leave by the principal, Brian Isaacs.

The move has prompted irate parents to threaten to report Isaacs to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) and they have also laid a charge of crimen injuria with the police, accusing the principal of using foul language while talking to their children.

Isaacs has denied the allegations.

The Western Cape Education Department is investigating the incident "as a matter of urgency", said Gert Witbooi, spokesperson for Education MEC Cameron Dugmore.

However, Isaacs has the backing of the school's Parent, Teacher and Student Association and he told the Cape Argus he would walk (out of the school) with his head high if necessary, but would not back down.

Isaacs is known to be passionate about education and he has a long history with the school having first been a pupil, then a teacher and now principal at the school.

"Education is serious business. Teachers are here to teach, not to discipline children. That must be done at home," said Isaacs.

"I know it's illegal and it's not education policy to throw them out but it's in the interest of the other pupils and the school.

"We as teachers want to be respected. You can't teach at a school where there is no discipline," he said.

The five boys who were thrown out on Wednesday are among 10 children who were "ousted" by the principal and issued with letters last year telling them not to return to school in 2008.

One of the suspended pupils had 34 transgressions in 2006 and 22 last year, according to his file.

After the five were excluded from class at 9.30am, eight parents gathered outside the school gates waiting to meet an education department official "before taking the matter further".

The parents of the excluded children have also accused Isaacs of demeaning the pupils after they said they had been called "rubbish" and "scumbags of the earth" by the principal while he marched them out of the school.

One mother said she had received letters since 2004 but it was the first time her child had been forced to leave the school.

"It's now a human rights issue. They are denied education and they are embarrassed in front of other children.

"We are taking the issue to the Human Rights Commission as we feel our children are harshly punished for petty transgressions," she said.

The parents said they would not take the easy way out which was to take their children to other schools but "will fight for justice".

"We want the department to discipline him - he can't be above the law," said one father.

Witbooi said the Education Department was investigating whether the correct procedure had been followed in refusing to accept the pupils.
